Class Notes from 2003

Engagement: Carol Wolffe, Davenport, is engaged to Jeffrey Gerard, Rock Island. She is employed by the center for Alcohol and Drug Services, Davenport. An Oct. 19, 2003 wedding is planned.

Marriage: David Kintigh and Stacie Brandle, both of Moline, were to be married July 19. He is employed at Davenport West High School.

Marriage: Jamie Dawn Houchin, c 2001, and William Walter McGowan both from Gravity, IA, were to be married July 11, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Marriage: Scott Anthony Solis and Christine Ann Walther, of Davenport, were married Sept. 14, 2002.

Marriage: Teresa Hurt and Gregory Hutcheson, of Davenport, were married May 4, in Long Grove, IA.

Birth: A son, Joshua James, was born Jan. 30, 2003, to Kirsty (Hankins) Bayer, Class of 1994, and Gregory Bayer. The family resides in Round Lake Heights, IL.

Years of Service: Heather Haxton Dabrowski is a Senior Manager of Organizational Learning for Braun Consulting in Chicago. She has been there for three years and was a consultant for PLATINUM technology (data warehousing, meta data) before that.

Death: Mary Elizabeth Reistroffer, c'47, of Davenport, died Sept. 30, 2002 in Milwaukee, WI. She was 78. Mariam Bertram, of Scottsdale, AZ, died Oct. 15, 2002. She worked for the Democratic National Committee in Washington, DC for 25 years, retiring five years ago.

Death: Mary Gertrude McGinn Weise, class of 1948, died in Orlando, FL on June 20, 2003. She was buried in the military cemetery in Bushnell, FL.

Death: Marvin L. Husby Jr., 59, husband of Camille (Conti) Husby, c'64, died Jan. 2, 2003, of cancer.

Death: Shirley Ann (Fiedler) Harris, 73, of Davenport, died Jan.28, 2003.

Death: Sandra J. Ploog, 44, of Davenport, died Feb. 25, 2003.

Death: Helen Zettel, 72, mother of Sue Zettel, c'87, died March 24, 2003, in Davenport.

Death: Kathryn Eggleston Brabant, CHM, c'46, died April 2, 2003.

Death: Dorothy (Dillon) Olsen, 90, c'62, died May 3, 2003, in Davenport, IA.

Death: Della Halgrave, c'57, died in May 2003. Bonnie Bell, 86, grandmother of Jennifer Waddell DeWitt, c'87, died May 29 in Galesburg, Ill.

Death: Bill, 85, the husband of Elizabeth (McCarthy) Meegan, c'53, of Moline, IL, died in June, 2003.

Death: Lidija Terezija Valainis Zarins, 66, c'59, died June 5, 2003, in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Death: Joan Troman, c'85, of Bettendorf, IA, died at the age of 44 on June 6, 2003.

Death: Marycrest staffer Vera L. (Petersen) Holm, 82, of Davenport, died June 9, 2003.

Death: Bernice (Koolman) Wiebener, c'71, of Davenport, IA, died June 24, 2003. She was 81.

Death: Mary Gertrude McGinn Weise, 80, c'48, died in Orlando, FL on June 20, 2003.

Death: Elinor Rutt Case, 89, of Moline, died Jan. 24, 2003. She was a graduate of Marycrest College and later taught classes at Marycrest.

Death: Elizabeth Hinze, 93, of Rock Island, died Jan. 22, 2003. She graduated from Marycrest in 1970 at the age of 61.

Death: Catherine Bacon, 85, of Moreno Valley, Calif., formerly of East Moline, died Jan. 20, 2003. She was a nursing instructor for 10 years at Marycrest.

Death: Ruth Kruse, 87, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died Jan. 12, 2003. She was a graduate of Marycrest.

Death: Verda Cole, 92, of Durant, Iowa, died Jan. 14, 2003. She was a graduate of Marycrest.

Death: Helen Martin, 81, of Davenport, died Jan. 4, 2003. She was a graduate of Marycrest.

Moving on in Education: Larry Keyes in a graduate program at WIU, M.S. in ITT.

Awards: Rita Callahan, of Davenport, won first place in November for her photo, "Northern Ireland," taken from a bus window.

Awards: Caroline England, a Davenport artist who attended MIU, has gained world-wide recognition for her watercolors. Her paintings are in private collections in the US, England, France, Australia, Thailand, Holland, Japan and Belgium. Her work is also on display locally at Augustana College Library, Modern Woodmen of America, Davenport Wells Fargo bank, Trinity Hospital East Campus, Hughes Aircraft in Rock Island to name a few.

Awards: Bonnie Jansen, of Davenport, a former secretary in the business department, achieved Certified Construction Contract Administrator status in June. She serves as president of the Quad-Cities Chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association.

Awards: Genevieve Kennedy Rafferty, c'42, was one of five Quad-Citians to receive a 2003 Jefferson Award from the American Institute of Public Service and KLJB-TV18, Davenport. The 31-year-old institute, established by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and others, recognizes volunteer workers. Rafferty, 81, received a medallion for Outstanding Public Services Benefiting Local Communities on May 8 from the local Fox station. She then was selected to be the Quad-City representative at National Ceremonies on June 16 in Washington, D.C. She was a social worker for more than 30 years. She also is a former school teacher.

Where are they now?

Jennifer Sergeant, c'92, of the Quad Cities, launched her latest CD titled "I Live For You" in February. She is a locally recognized Christian music leader.

Ann (Fotiadis) Kandis, c'86, of East Moline, IL, is an ER Physician at Genesis East, Davenport, IA.

Virginia Barchman is Assistant Iowa Attorney General. Michael McCarty, of Rock Island, has a new book, Giants of the Genre. The book is a collection of 20 interviews with noted science fiction, horror, and fantasy writers.

Kevin O'Neill became head coach for the NBA Toronto Raptors in June. He coached basketball at Marycrest for 1982-83 season.

Lori Gonner Byerly, MIU business advisor in 1989, joined a Quad-City group on a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic in June.

Pat De Luca, former MIU President, became superintendent of the 7,600-student Harlem School District near Rockford, IL, in July.

Former MIU President Pat DeLuca is a special education teacher at Neil Armstrong Elementary School, Park View, Iowa.

Jeff Ashcraft, Class of 1986 and the former college vice president for institutional advancement, has opened his own venture, Business Partner, The Marketing Center. It is located at 2406 E. 53rd St., Davenport.

Ronita Farren, has re-joined the Quad-City Times as a classified ads collector. She graduated with a B.A. in communications.

Janet Holton, Class of 1997, has joined Great River Bank & Trust as its development specialist. She graduated with a B.A. in communications.

Liz D. Blackwell, has joined the trust department of Northwest Bank & Trust Co., Davenport. She received her B.A. in business from Marycrest.

James Decker, an MIU faculty, joined Mount St. Clare College, Clinton, Iowa, as a full-time English professor.

David Stedwell, a longtime Marycrest professor, is a full-time faculty member in Mount St. Clare computer graphics design program and e-learning specialist.

Christy Low, is the information technology curriculum specialist at Mount St. Clare.

Tom Jacobs, is at Southwestern College in Kansas as Division Chair of the Comptuer Science and Communications Division, which includes English.

Mark Garton, is now teaching ESL classes at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa.
