Class Notes from 2006

Congratulations:

Gail Farley, C’ 1980, was awarded the St. Luke’s Medical Center 2005 Nursing Excellence Award. She is patient care coordinator in the adult intensive care unit at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, Boise, Idaho.

Leota and Daryl Buffington, parents of Tracy Buffington, C’87, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 12, 1955.

Rob Lipnick, former Marycrest faculty, was featured in an article in the Quad-City Times, detailing highlights of a trip he led to Spain in 2005 with his art students at Scott Community College, Bettendorf.

Diane Nelson was featured in a Quad-City Times feature on The Way We Work in November, 2005. She is an international flight attendant with American Airlines. She graduated from Marycrest with a bachelor of arts degree in commercial art and advertising.

Ray Swetalla, the former Marycrest head men’s basketball coach, is the assistant basketball coach at Augustana College, Rock Island. He and his sons, Dain and Nate – both players -- helped lead the Vikings to a No. 5 Division III ranking this year.

 

What's Up Lately:

Lisa McCluskey, C/2000, is the public relations manager for Martin Memorial Health Systems, Stuart, Fla.

Laura Curry, C’1991, has been named hospice house supervisor for the future Genesis VNA & Hospice Clarissa Cook House, Bettendorf. A nursing major, she is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care nurse.

John Hassig, ’1995, is in his fourth year as executive director of visual and performing arts at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and director of the Heartland Festival. The MIU theatre graduate was profiled in the Quad-City Times on June 5, 2005.

Dawn Saul, Davenport, the former communications manager for Marycrest, has joined the Ad Group in Bettendorf.

Scott Edward Rutledge, PhD, MSW, is the Assistant professor of social work in the School of Social Administration at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Gertrude Ehlers, 83, recently received the chair award for outstanding volunteer service from the American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities Area. The former part-time Marycrest instructor was profiled in the Quad-City Times on June 28, 2005.

Delia Dreifurst, 26, is the resource development associate for United Way of the Quad-Cities Area. She received her bachelor of arts degree from MIU in business administration.

Chris Gallin, Davenport, was appointed to the Scott County Board of Supervisors in 2005. She has a bachelor of arts degree in speech/drama and language arts from Marycrest. She retired in 2003 after 33 years in the school system, the last five as the principal of West High School.

Michele Hancock, C’1995, is the director of the Positive Parenting at Trinity Episcopal Church. She operated the former Marycrest child care center in Peterson Hall.

Harry Fisher, former Marycrest assistant business professor, is teaching business at Eureka College, Eureka, Ill.

Trish (Kelly) Knight, C’1988, is president of Knight Consulting and Training, Marshall, Mich. She specializes in organizational communication. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member of Siena Heights University.
... She is the current state president for Business & Professional Women/USA. In 2005, she was Ambassador of the Year and nominated for the Athena Award. She serves on the board of directors of Woman’s Co-op, a non-profit that teaches life improvement skills to women at-risk. While at Marycrest, she worked in the Communication, Fine & Performing Arts Division office and the Development office at Marycrest.

 

Engagement: Alum Carrie Wiederholt, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is engaged to Robbie Aristodemo. She graduated from MIU with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Her fiancé is a professional soccer player.

Marriage: Alum Kayla Eckert (’95) and Louis Uptmor, both of Phoenix, Ariz., were married Feb. 26, 2006, at St. Pius in Rock Island.

 

Deaths:

Jeanne Kulp, 86, of Davenport, died Feb. 26, 2006. She worked more than 20 years at Marycrest in the business office, retiring in 1982.

Alum Mildred (Steele) Duda, 93, of Bettendorf, died Jan. 16, 2006.

Judy Lunardi, Davenport, mother of Alum Lynne Lunardi, died Jan. 20. 2006.

Sr. Veronica Kirscher, CHM, 75, died Nov. 6, 2005.

Donna Holland, 57, of Park View, Iowa, died Sept. 26, 2005. She was the former director of the Substance Abuse Counselor Training Program at Marycrest.

Alum Katherine ‘Kathy’ Steward, 52, of Phoenix, died Aug. 22, 2005.

Alum Douglas ‘Doug’ Heritage, 52, of Davenport, died Aug. 21, 2005. He received his bachelor of science degree in computers.

Francis Delaney, husband of alum Patricia Ann (Coogan) Delaney died July 28, 2005, in San Antonio, Texas. The couple were married 54 years. Mrs. Delaney attended Marycrest from 1947-1949.

Alum Carol (Stiegel) Howard, 68, of Moline, died July 19, 2005.

Alum Marjorie Kautz, 81, of Davenport, died July 9, 2005. Her husband, Richard Kautz, 82, died June 14, 2005. He was a former member of the Marycrest Board of Trustees.

Margaret Ann Lopez, died April 1, 2006

Alum Marilyn (Panther) Berkley, C’ 1955, died June 14, 2005. She was 62.

Alum Benton McAdams, 53, of Loves Park., Ill., died June 12, 2005. He was one of the first male students to attend Marycrest.

Alum Rebecca (Foster) Schellenger, 97, Davenport, died May 26, 2005.

Alum Paula Sharoian, 67, died May 20, 2005.

Sister Mary Madeleine Kleffner, CHM, died May 11, 2005. She had taken post graduate course at Marycrest.

Alum Sally McManus, 79, of Indianapolis, Ind., died May 4, 2005.

Jane Byrne Schriver, 82, of Milan, Ill., died Jan. 4, 2005. She was a former nursing instructor at Marycrest.

Rosemary C. (Wooldridge) Lohrman, 79, of Bettendorf, C’1990, died Nov. 15, 2004.
